The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously flexible, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
